In a significant step towards improving dental care for underserved families in Curaçao, the project "A Smile for Curaçao" has been making strides in providing accessible dental health services to children across the island.
With financial support from the Rotary Club of Curaçao, along with contributions from various sponsors and volunteers, the project is reaching more children than ever, delivering essential dental care and raising awareness about oral hygiene.
The Current Challenge of Oral Health in Curaçao
For many in Curaçao, dental care remains a luxury that’s sought only when pain strikes, often leading to tooth extractions instead of preventative care. Oral hygiene's connection to overall health is frequently overlooked, which has led to an urgent need for accessible dental health services, especially for underprivileged children. The "A Smile for Curaçao" project, initiated in 2021 by Lisette van der Harst and Saskia den Hartog of Smiles World, aims to tackle this issue head-on by bringing dental care to those who need it most.
Project Overview and Early Successes
Since its official launch, the project has organized multiple community events, collaborating with local and international dental professionals. Each event includes oral health screenings and education, dental supplies for children, and, when necessary, referrals for further treatment. A pilot program held on International Oral Health Day in 2022 revealed a high demand for dental care and a critical need for better oral health practices.
The program, initially intended to be held quarterly, now runs twice a year due to logistical constraints. Each session focuses on high-need neighborhoods to reduce barriers to attendance. After positive feedback, it was decided to continue the initiative in partnership with local dental associations and volunteer organizations, including the NAARVvM (Dental Hygienists Association of Curaçao).
Expanding Community Engagement with Family-Friendly Events
Beyond just dental care, "A Smile for Curaçao" creates a fun, family-oriented atmosphere with face painting, sports, and games for the children. A local DJ provides entertainment, adding to the appeal of these events. Competitions with prizes, including electric toothbrushes and hygiene kits, encourage kids to learn and retain good dental practices.
Addressing Challenges and Ensuring Project Sustainability
The project is largely dependent on donations and volunteer support. The Royal Navy Charities Committee has assisted with transportation for both supplies and attendees, and provided volunteers to support event operations. Yet, sustaining the project long-term remains challenging due to its reliance on third-party donations and logistical support.
A unique challenge has arisen with Curaçao’s undocumented children, many of whom lack access to regular dental care. A partnership with the foundation Salu Pa Tur, which provides healthcare to undocumented residents, has expanded the program to include these vulnerable children.
Future Plans and How the Community Can Help
Looking ahead, "A Smile for Curaçao" aims to continue its work at least annually, with sessions scheduled across the island in accessible community locations. Project leaders are also working on a final report to provide an overview of Curaçao's dental health needs and identify gaps in care.
The project relies heavily on community involvement, and there are many ways for residents to help. Donations of dental supplies, sponsorships, and volunteer support can make a significant impact.
Together, with community backing, "A Smile for Curaçao" can continue to bring vital oral health services to the children of Curaçao, building healthier smiles and a brighter future for the island.
