Boca Ascencion Clean-Up Day: A United Effort for a Cleaner Curaçao

Yesterday, September 21, 2024, the serene shores of Boca Ascencion witnessed a significant clean-up effort as part of World Clean Up Day Curaçao. Volunteers from various organizations joined forces to tackle the environmental challenge. The Rotary Club of Curaçao, Rotary Club Willemstad, Interact Club of Curaçao, Rotaract Club of Curaçao, scholarship students, and many other dedicated volunteers participated in this impactful event.

Over 30 cubic meters (m³) of trash were removed from the grounds—equivalent to the volume of 2 to 3 adult elephants! This staggering amount of waste was collected under the relentless sun, but the dedication of the volunteers never wavered. Luckily, a refreshing breeze swept through the area, providing some relief, and the team spirit remained at an all-time high.

Among the group was a smaller, more specialized task force humorously dubbed the "Rotary SEALs." This team took on the tougher, more intricate clean-up operations near the mouth of the Boca, ensuring even the trickiest areas were cleared of debris.

After the hard work was done, the Interact Club and the scholarship students took part in an enriching activity—a hike through the stunning natural landscape, complete with turtle spotting. As they explored the area, they were reminded of the importance of protecting Curaçao’s rich biodiversity.

Volunteers used flotation devices to transport trash to the designated collection areas, a clever innovation that made the operation smoother and more efficient.

The impact of the clean-up goes beyond just the physical removal of waste—it also serves as a powerful reminder that every action counts and that collective efforts can spark a ripple effect for a cleaner, healthier environment.

A special thank you goes out to Irie Tours for arranging transportation for the students, and to all the dedicated individuals and organizations involved in this incredible initiative. Not only has the ground at Boca Ascencion been transformed, but the event has helped to foster a mindset of environmental responsibility, creating a bigger impact each time.

Together, this inspiring day showcased what can be achieved when a community unites for a common cause—ensuring a cleaner, greener Curaçao for generations to come.
